Boerne-Samuel V. Champion High School

Boerne I.S.D.

Boerne, Texas

Located in the rolling Texas Hill Country, Champion High School responds to its surroundings with sensitivity. Thoughtful design and innovative technologies create a place to learn about nature and address the student's needs, without ignoring those of the environment.

An on-site wwater harvesting system captures rainwater in two above ground cisterns plus additional storage in oversized underground piping, in order to harvest an estimated 10.7 million gallons of water annually. As one of the largest collection systems at any K-12 school in Texas, the district expects to reduce its anticipated dependency on municipal water by 80 percent.

The school also preserves the site's character and natural features. Separate academic and athletic buildings arranged in natural voids between old-growth Texas Live Oaks create shaded places for outdoor gathering and learning. An elevated footbridge across the site's existing creek leads students to the athletic playfields.

The building's orientation optimizes natural breezes and daylight in teaching spaces. Regional materials, including limestone quarried on site for use in the building's foundation, pay tribute to local building traditions. The user-friendly, low-maintenance, and energy-efficient campus doesn't sacrifice state-of-the-art facilities to achieve sustainable success.
