Champion High School

Boerne I.S.D.
Boerne, Texas

Champion High School in Boerne, TX is a 300,000 square foot high school built for a 2050 maximum student capacity.  Situated in the rolling Texas Hill Country, Champion High School maintains a symbiotic and sensitive relationship with its site.  During the course of design and construction, the buildings and parking lots were carefully situated to preserve as much of the natural landscape and existing trees as possible.  The views from the school were carefully located to capture the scenic qualities of the surrounding landscape, while also allowing a tremendous amount of daylight to flood the school.  The stone and corrugated metal materials used on the exterior connect the school to its surroundings, imitating the similar materials used in local farms and other indigenous buildings.  Other features, such as the polished concrete flooring, clerestory windows for daylighting, and exposed concrete structure, show that this high school will be a user-friendly, low-maintenance, energy-efficient campus, while not sacrificing the state-of-the-art facilities that are characteristic of this District.  One of the most significant sustainable accomplishments of Champion High School is its water harvesting system, which collects both rain water and the building’s own condensate water.  This water harvesting system will be the largest of its kind of any school in Texas and will act as a teaching tool, showing the importance of water conservation and harvesting in the drought-prone area of south central Texas.
