Austin, Texas Rating: Anticipate a 3 star rating from the City of Austin Green Builder Program The new Austin Northeast Middle School is a 160,000 sf facility designed to house 1100 students. The school was designed in accordance with the Austin Green Building program and anticipates a 3-star rating. The building is sited so that the classroom spaces take advantage of abundant north and south views and natural light. The pavement impact was minimized by not exceeding the local code for parking requirements, giving preference to carpools and locating the paved area away from an existing wooded hillside. Northeast Middle School is designed to greatly exceed energy code requirements and significantly reduce potable water demands. In addition, the School District has agreed to use green power for 30% of the school’s energy needs for 10 years. The facility utilizes low VOC emitting, recycled and regional building materials. It also incorporates a recycling collection area, an energy star roof and an outdoor teaching area.
